How It Works

📐

The Formula

We use the US Navy Method, which estimates body fat percentage using circumference measurements. For men: %BF = 495 / (1.0324 - 0.19077×log10(waist-neck) + 0.15456×log10(height)) - 450. For women, hip measurement is also included in the calculation.

💡

Why Body Fat Percentage Matters

Unlike BMI, body fat percentage directly measures adipose tissue and provides a more accurate picture of health and fitness. Essential fat is necessary for bodily functions, while excess fat can increase health risks.

📊

Understanding the Categories

Essential fat is the minimum needed for health (2-5% men, 10-13% women). Athletes typically have 6-13% (men) or 14-20% (women). Fitness range is 14-17% (men) or 21-24% (women). Average is 18-24% (men) or 25-31% (women).

Tips for Measuring Accurately

Measure in the morning before eating. Use a flexible tape measure. For waist, measure at the navel level. For neck, measure below the larynx. For women, measure hips at the widest point. Keep the tape snug but not compressing skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a healthy body fat percentage?

Healthy body fat percentages vary by gender and fitness level. For men, essential fat is 2-5%, athletes typically range from 6-13%, fitness level is 14-17%, and an acceptable average is 18-24%. For women, essential fat is 10-13%, athletes range from 14-20%, fitness level is 21-24%, and an acceptable average is 25-31%. Body fat above these ranges may increase health risks.

How can I measure my body fat at home?

You can estimate body fat at home using several methods. The US Navy method (used by this calculator) requires only a tape measure to take circumference measurements of your neck, waist, and hips. Skinfold calipers pinch skin folds at specific body sites for an estimate. Bioelectrical impedance scales send a small current through your body. For more accurate results, professional methods like DEXA scans or hydrostatic weighing are available at clinics and gyms.

What is the difference between body fat percentage and BMI?

BMI (Body Mass Index) is a simple ratio of weight to height and does not distinguish between muscle and fat. A muscular person can have a high BMI but low body fat. Body fat percentage directly measures the proportion of fat tissue in your body, making it a more accurate indicator of health and fitness. Body fat percentage is especially useful for athletes and people who strength train, as it reflects actual body composition rather than just overall weight.
